Tips on Writing your Application Letter and CV 08 Sep 2009
筆者寫了多篇關於如何寫求職信的文章,但仍有很多讀者來信詢問,怎樣才可以在眾多求職者中突圍而出呢?其實,求職信只是工具,要成功找到合適的好工,不論你是剛剛畢業的同學,還是有多年工作經驗的打工一族,首先要決定的不是你要找甚麼工作,而是你的事業目標 ( career objective ) 是甚麼、希望從事哪一個行業、是否想轉行,以及你的工作能力和專長是甚麼,對於相關機構你能有甚麼貢獻。
作為僱主或招聘人員,基本上會根據兩份文件來決定是否會選出這位應徵者,進入下一步的甄選程序:求職信( application letter / cover letter ) 和履歷表 ( resume / curriculum vitae / CV )。
寫求職信易犯的錯誤 ( pitfalls of an application letter )
一些注重細節的僱主往往可以憑著以下的資料,很快就把不合格的來信扔掉:
* 錯字╱別字,尤其是僱主的公司名稱或人名。( typos or mis-spelled words )
* 文法上的錯誤 ( grammatical errors )
* 非正規的語氣 ( a casual or informal tone )
* 格式混亂 ( poor formatting )
相反,一封好的求職信應該達到甚麼目的呢?必須帶有個人的風格,不只是列出事實,像一篇流水賬,因為履歷表裏已包含了詳細的資料,求職信的作用是突出重點 ( emphasize on the key points )、你目前或之前的工作經驗 ( your present and/or past working experiences )、你的能力及強項 ( your capabilities and strengths ),以及可以在這個職位上為機構帶來甚麼貢獻 ( how you could contribute to the organization in the post you apply for )。目的是讓潛在僱主看後,認同你是適當的人選,希望能夠儘快邀請你加入他們的行列。
請看以下例子:
If you are applying for a position as a sales clerk, you may show how all of your previous roles have helped you develop an ability to work with all types of people, manage many tasks, or effectively market a product.
If you are applying to be a consultant at a top organizational consulting firm, you may show how your previous work helped you hone analytical, qualitative skills, as well as the ability to partner with team members at all levels.
求職信的結構 ( common structure of an application letter )
一封求職信基本的結構可包括:
* Brief Introduction explaining who you are and the job you are applying for;
* 1 - 2 paragraphs on your most important career experiences ( only the experiences that relate most to this particular job), no need to repeat again on all previous jobs (in the CV );
* Closing paragraph that emphasizes why this company is right for you, and also why you are right for this company.
無論具體內容是甚麼,最重要的是「對我 ( 僱主 ) 來說有甚麼意義」( what's in it for me )?因此在你下筆之前,必須看清楚求職廣告上列出的主要工作是甚麼及要求是甚麼,然後列出自己可以為僱主帶來甚麼。每一封求職信都一定要修改來切合每一個職位所需。
寫履歷的注意事項
至於履歷,關於工作方面主要涵蓋的內容為:‘A description of your employment history, including the name of the companies you worked for, your positions, the dates of your employment, as well as a short description of your responsibilities and contributions.’
可參考以下重點:
* 用分點形式 ( use bullet points, instead of long and complete sentences )
* 用「情況 ── 行動 ── 成果」模式 ( use the ‘Situation-Action-Result’ model )
For example, instead of writing ‘answered customer calls’, you may write ‘received customer phone calls and delivered superior service, leading to a 10% increase in monthly revenues’
* 盡量用數字來表達,突出成果。( $ and % signs can and should be used when possible as they stand out and emphasize results. )
* 用主動的動詞 ( start off bullet points with strong, active verbs: instead of writing ‘was responsible for...’, write ‘developed/steered/managed...’)
* 盡量精簡 ( keep your bullet points concise: try not to exceed two lines and consolidate redundant bullets where possible. )
* 修正錯字和確保連貫性 ( proofread for typos and inconsistencies )
最後,也是最重要的是假設你是僱主,看看是否每一點都有意義。如果我聘請了你,能否為我的機構或部門帶來即時的收益。
